Explained

Reach vs impressions: people against views

The short answer

Reach counts the unique accounts that saw a post. Impressions count every time it was shown, repeats included, so impressions are never lower than reach.

What is the difference between reach and impressions?

Reach is people, impressions are views. If 1,000 accounts see a Reel and 200 of them watch it twice, reach is 1,000 and impressions are 1,200. The gap between the two is a rough measure of how often the content gets a second look.

Instagram has since folded impressions into a metric it calls views in Insights, which counts plays and displays together. The idea is the same: a count of times shown, with repeats.

Which matters more for a brand?

Reach, for anything about awareness. A campaign that hits the same 10,000 people five times has 50,000 impressions and has still only met 10,000 people. Impressions matter more for frequency, the number of times someone needs to see a product before it sticks, which is a media buyer's question rather than a social manager's.

Can you see another account's reach or impressions?

No. Both are first-party numbers that only the account owner sees in Instagram Insights. Any tool that quotes a competitor's reach is estimating it from likes and comments, and the estimate is worst for exactly the accounts you care about: big ones with a lot of inactive followers.

What we measure instead

Because reach is private, we publish what is public and countable: followers, likes and comments on recent posts, engagement rate, and how many posts by other accounts mention the brand. Every figure is a reading with a date, never an estimate of reach.

Reach vs Impressions: questions people ask

Can impressions be lower than reach?

No. Every account counted in reach saw the post at least once, so impressions are at least as high as reach.

What is a good ratio of impressions to reach?

There is no standard. A ratio well above 1 means people are seeing the post more than once, which happens with content that is saved, shared or shown again by the algorithm.

Did Instagram remove impressions?

Instagram replaced impressions with views as the main count of times content was shown. Reach is still reported separately.
