Brand mention tools: a buyer's guide for brand and agency teams

Every brand mention tool does the same two things: runs searches for your name on a schedule and tells you what is new. They differ on where they search and how they charge, and those two decide which one you should pay for.

Start with where your mentions actually happen

A tool that watches fifteen sources costs more than one that watches one, and most of that cost buys coverage of places your customers may never post. A B2B software company gets talked about on LinkedIn, Reddit and review sites. A beauty brand gets talked about on Instagram. Pick the tool whose list matches your list.

The fastest check is your own last month. Where did the mentions you already know about come from? If the answer is press, Google Alerts may be enough. If it is everywhere, a broad tool. If it is Instagram captions and hashtags, a narrow tool will find more of them.

How brand mention tools charge

Three shapes. Published tiers that cap keywords, mentions or users, where the thing to ask is what happens past the cap: Brand24's pricing page says extra mentions carry overage fees. A single flat plan. Or a quote and an annual contract, which is how Meltwater and Brandwatch sell.

For an agency the cap that bites is usually brands or keywords, because every client is another set. Count how many brands you need covered, yours plus competitors, before you compare prices.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • Does it find posts that never tag us, or only the ones that do?
  • Which networks does it actually search, by name?
  • How often does it search, and how fast does an alert arrive?
  • How many users, brands and keywords does the plan include?
  • What happens when we go past a mention limit?
  • How far back does history go, and is it an add-on?
  • Can we cancel monthly, or is it an annual contract?

Where Monitor Mentions is narrower

For social posts we cover Instagram and nothing else. No TikTok, YouTube, Reddit, X or LinkedIn. Alerts arrive by email from searches that run every six hours, which is not real time. We read captions and hashtags, so a brand only spoken in a reel is missed. There is no API on sale.

What you get for that is depth on one network at one price: every post shown with the term that found it, competitors on the same schedule as you, and a public page for each brand that you can read before paying. If you need the whole web, one of the broad tools above is the right buy and our comparison pages say which.

If Instagram is where your customers talk

Search your brand on the home page and read the posts we already found before you pay for anything. The plan covers your brand and every competitor you add, for one monthly price.

Questions people ask

What is the best brand mention tool?

The one that covers the place your customers actually talk. If that is the whole web, a broad listening suite. If it is Instagram, a tool built for Instagram costs less and finds more there. Start with where your mentions happen, then compare price.

Is there a free brand mention tool?

Google Alerts is free and covers pages Google Search indexes. Most paid tools offer a trial rather than a free plan. Monitor Mentions keeps a public page for every brand in its catalogue, free to read without an account.

How are brand mention tools priced?

Three ways, broadly: published monthly tiers limited by keywords, mentions or users; one flat plan; or a custom quote with an annual contract. Ask what happens when you exceed a mention limit, because some tools charge overage.

Does Monitor Mentions cover TikTok, X or news sites?

For social posts it covers Instagram only. Brand pages also show publisher news about the brand. There is no TikTok, YouTube, Reddit or X coverage, and if you need those, a broad listening tool is the better buy.
